Experience for the 50 plus |
| The training programme ‘Driving Experience
for the 50 plus’ is an individual programme geared towards the particular
needs of the 50 plus generation; it is non-discriminating, does not ‘point
the finger’ at them, and no-one is made to feel like a learner driver
again. |
The programme begins with a detailed theoretical part which
teaches the essential basics of the physics of driving; this forms a sound
basis for the ensuing practical driving exercises:
These include the teaching of the best possible sitting position, braking
exercises, practice in driving round bends, and combined braking and evasion
exercises. |
 |
| All exercises are com-pleted with the participants’ own
vehicles – however, there is no need for them to worry about their ‘pride
and joy’: the exercises are carried out on wet, slippery surfaces
and at very low speeds, so that wear and tear to the vehicles is no greater
than that arising from driving on country roads. |
A special feature of the ‘Driving Experience for the
50 plus’ is that during the course of the training day we introduce
you to the innovative equipment and fittings of modern vehicles that serve
to enhance their comfort and safety, and which you can also test for yourself.
In addition to the safety systems, such as ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System)
and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) that are discussed and demonstrated
in detail, the significance of comfort extras for safety is emphasised;
after all, enhanced comfort leads to a better sense of well-being, greater
powers of concentration and therefore more safety.
An example: in particular, distance warning systems are ideal for older
people (for instance, Park Distance Control, abbreviated to PDC), because
they save the driver having to turn round in all directions while parking. |
| As each participant has different requirements, the instructors
will go into them all individu-ally with the person concerned. In this
way, any inhibitions that may exist can be resolved, and participants can
be carefully trained to deal with situations that keep re-occurring whilst
driving – accordingly, the individual mobility of those belonging
to the 50 plus generation will be maintained as long as possible as will
their safety. |
